£140,000 for an old postcard!

Gustamps customers were all talking about the postcard which sold at a stamp auction for £140,000. One of the main topics of conversation at Gustamps shop last week was about a 1918 postcard sent by Pablo Picasso. Gustamps heard that the card bears a drawing by Picasso. According to Gustamps the postcard was sent by Picasso at the end of the First World War in 1918 to his friend Guillermo Apollinaire in France. Sales of postcards at Gustamps shop has been brisk and Gustamps manager commented that the sale of the rare postcard for £140,000 seemed to have sparked off extra interest in old postcards at Gustamps in Brighton. Another philatelic question to Gustamps

Gustamps was asked recently about the world's rarest stamp. Gustamps confirmed that the rarest stamp in the world was in fact the 1856 British Guiana 1 cent Black on Magenta. When Gustamps was asked the value of a stamp Gustamps replied it was sold recently at Sothebys auction for over 9 million dollars. Although bought anonymously it's Gustamps understanding that the owner of the stamp is Mr. Stuart Weitzman. Gustamps added that the famous stamp was on display at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in the USA. Gustamps said it's not too late for people in the USA to view the stamp as it is proposed that it will go on display at a different venue in the USA for several years.

Today's philatelic question to Gustamps

Here is another interesting question to Gustamps. "Do any stamps exist portraying the children's book character "The Very Hungry Caterpillar?" Gustamps explain that such a stamp does exist.Gustamps say that it was issued by the Royal Mail. Gustamps add that the 68p stamp has a hole in it. Gustamps guess it must have been made by the Hungry Caterpillar!!! :-)  This stamp is based on the character from the popular children's book by author Eric Carle.

Gustamps answer stamp collectors questions

Following on with stamp collectors questions to Gustamps, today Gustamps answer George Collis' philatelist and entomologist's question. He asked Gustamps if any stamps exist depicting a 'Rhinoceros beetle.'

Gustamps' answer to George is yes. The Rhinoceros beetle is depicted on a Two Euro stamp from the Aland Islands. The stamp was issued in 2006. Look out for another philatelic question and answer from Gustamps tomorrow.
